Twitter: a government strategy for citizen engagement

Neil Williams, head of corporate digital channels at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in the UK, proposes a Twitter strategy for UK government departments. He suggests that Twitter provides a platform for interaction between citizens and government and has published a 20-page departmental strategy template. The GTEC blog has already noted that this strategy doesn't really address how public servants can benefit from using Twitter in their daily work.

We came across this article regarding lessons learned by Australian government agencies following the recent bushfires. It seems that government web sites were not competing well with the private sector when it came to search engine optimization: web searches for bushfire information were more likely to return results from nws web sites than results from government agencies. Given how important it is for the right message to be disseminated during emergencies, it seems that SEO is a key area for the Australian government to focus on.
